Quantum Physics & Spiritual Laws

Quantum Physics & Spiritual LawsQuantum Physics & Spiritual Laws

Popular writers have used some of the ideas of quantum mechanics (QM) to explain spiritual and universal law. If you want to see if this is a suitable use of physics, you should examine both QM and spiritual philosophy carefully.

Mathematical Tools

Matter behaves strangely at the subatomic scale; everyday experiences don't help much in understanding it. Physicists have developed mathematical tools that describe the quantum world very well.

Observation

QM says you determine the state of subatomic particles by observing them. Until they're observed, they're in an indeterminate state with a set of possible outcomes. The observer does not choose the outcome, though she sees it.

Choice

According to spiritual thinking, you determine your reality by your choices. You also determine it by your own thoughts. Awareness of thoughts leads to better choices.

Scale

Though the laws of physics are clear, different laws have more influence at different scales of size, time and speed. Though quantum physics still applies on the human scale, their effects are so small, they have no practical significance.

Reality

If you imagine better situations and focus on better outcomes, you may eventually achieve them. Some spiritual writers assert that, by imagining better situations, you reshape reality by tinkering with QM events. Since QM has not been shown to have much effect at the human scale, this is unlikely.
