The rather petite Islet of Lanzarote that forms part of the Canary Islands is to be found approximately 80 miles from the Spanish Sahara, i.e. the present day West African coast. The 1930s saw the Island become victim to recurrent volcanic eruptions which wiped out settlements in the area. The magma that flew out of the volcanoes increased the area of the Islet by a quarter of its original expanse. This saw the region being christened the -Island of fire'. Many of the inhabitants of the Island at the time practised agriculture as a way of sustaining their livelihood and had no option other than vacating the land in search of better agricultural land.
The Lanzarote islet has grown over the years to become a favourite of many vacationers from all over the world. This is owed to the fact that the Island is situated in close proximity with the Tropic of cancer which gives it a warm bubbly climate for most of the year. Many tourists visit it during the winter season as their countries experience the extreme weather conditions that come with that time of the year. The Playa Blanca, Puerto Del Carmen and Playa Blanca offer excellent accommodation facilities in world class resorts.
Compared to other tourist destinations in Spain, Lanzarote is quite different. Skyscrapers typical of nearly all other places of interest in Spain are not evident in Lanzarote. This is as a result of a legislation championed by Cesar Manrique that saw to the protection of the Island of Lanzarote from erosion by effects of tourism. The law outlawed construction of high buildings. This has seen the islet remain unspoilt through the years and has helped the island in retaining its charm from the pre historic period.
The people of Lanzarote treat Manrique with utmost respect for his contribution in making the Islet one with a diverse cultural and traditional heritage unmatched by none of the canaries. The Island is liked by many for its scenic volcanic landscape. The most frequented attraction on the Island is the volcano park which showcases a number of features formed as a result of volcanic activity in the region. Other tourist attractions in the region include a grand underground tarn endowed with a variety of aquatic vegetation. Before his death in the year 1992, Cesar played a big role in helping the Island of fire to be acknowledged as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO site.
